Exemestane, which is also known as Aromasin, is a peptide that is structurally related to androstenedione.  It posssesses a molecular mass of 296.403, and its molecular formula is C20H24O2.

Exemestane at a Glance

According to scientific study that has been conducted on animal test subjects, Exemestane has been determined to inhibit the production of the aromatase enzyme, which is an enzyme that converts androgens into estrogens. Specifically, the peptide acts by irreversibly binding to the active site of the enzyme in an act that has been dubbed “suicide inhibition.”  This act ultimately causes inactivation, and it has been determined that this ultimately causes a drop in circulating estrogen concentrations amongst female, post-menopausal animal test subjects. 

Theorized Benefits of Exemestane

Because of the relationship that Exemestane has exhibited with aromatase, scientific study based on animal test subjects has determined that the peptide could conceivably be a vital ally in treating breast cancer.  The reason for this theory is built on the notion that breast cancer cell growth could be estrogen dependent. As such, it is thought that Exemestane’s ability to lower the circulation of estrogen concentration could cause enough estrogen deprivation to slow down the onset of breast cancers that are deemed to be hormone dependent.  On a more specific scale, it is thought that the peptide could be used for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal subjects whose disease has moved on past tamoxifen therapy.
